Single Pipe Hydro Tester
hydro testing machine
At Marley Machinery, we manufacture Single Pipe Hydro Testers for steel pipe manufacturers that need to hydrostatically test individual pipes before shipment or further processing.
We do not treat this equipment as one fixed standard machine. The single pipe hydrostatic testing machine is designed around the customer's actual pipe production requirements. Pipe diameter, pipe length, wall thickness, required test pressure, pressure holding time, production capacity and plant layout all affect the final machine configuration.
Our equipment is designed to carry out the complete hydrostatic testing cycle for one steel pipe, including pipe positioning, water filling, end sealing, pressurization, pressure holding, pressure release and water drainage.
The final specifications are confirmed after we review the customer's steel pipe dimensions and testing requirements.
Single Pipe Hydro Tester Configuration
Because every steel pipe production line can have different testing requirements, we configure the equipment according to the pipe range and production conditions rather than applying one fixed specification to every project.

What Is a Single Pipe Hydro Tester?
A single pipe hydro tester is an industrial machine used to perform hydrostatic pressure testing on one steel pipe at a time.
The pipe is positioned between the testing heads and sealed at both ends. Water is then introduced into the pipe, air is removed as required, and the hydraulic system raises the internal pressure to the specified test value.
The pressure is maintained for the required holding period. During this stage, the system monitors pressure stability and the operator or control system checks the pipe for leakage or other unacceptable conditions.
After the test is completed, pressure is released and the testing water is discharged or returned to the water circulation system. The pipe can then be removed and the next pipe positioned for testing.
This individual testing arrangement is commonly used where each pipe needs to meet a defined hydrostatic testing requirement.
How Our Single Pipe Hydrostatic Testing Machine Works
We normally divide the testing cycle into the following operations:
|
Testing Step |
Main Operation |
|
1. Pipe Positioning |
One steel pipe is transferred and aligned in the testing position |
|
2. End Sealing |
The pipe ends are sealed according to the pipe size and test pressure |
|
3. Water Filling |
The pipe is filled with the testing medium |
|
4. Pressurization |
The hydraulic system increases the internal pressure to the required value |
|
5. Pressure Holding |
The specified pressure is maintained for the required test period |
|
6. Pressure Release |
Pressure is safely released after completion of the test |
|
7. Drainage |
Water is discharged or returned to the recycling system |
|
8. Unloading |
The tested pipe is removed from the testing station |
The PLC control system can coordinate these operations to reduce unnecessary manual intervention and keep the testing cycle consistent.
Single Pipe Hydro Testing for Different Steel Pipe Sizes
One of the first points we discuss with a customer is the range of steel pipes that the machine needs to test.
A machine designed for a narrow pipe range is different from one that must handle a wide range of diameters and lengths. The sealing arrangement, hydraulic capacity, testing head movement, pipe support and machine structure may all need to be considered.
When we configure a single pipe hydro tester for different steel pipe sizes, we normally review:
- Outside diameter range
- Pipe length range
- Wall thickness
- Pipe weight
- Pipe-end condition
- Required test pressure
- Pressure holding time
- Number of pipes to be tested per hour
- Available installation space
- Required automation level
This approach allows us to select the appropriate machine configuration instead of forcing different pipe sizes into an unsuitable standard design.
Pipe-End Sealing System
Reliable sealing is essential for hydrostatic pipe testing.
The sealing method has to withstand the required test pressure while maintaining a stable seal during the pressure-holding period. The appropriate arrangement depends on the pipe diameter, wall thickness, pipe-end condition and test pressure.
Depending on the project, we can configure different sealing solutions, including:
- Pipe-end face sealing
- Internal rubber sealing
- External radial sealing
- External sealing arrangements for larger pipe diameters
We select the sealing configuration together with the hydraulic and mechanical design rather than treating the sealing system as an independent component.
Hydraulic Pressure System
The hydraulic system is sized according to the required testing pressure and the internal volume of the pipe.
For high-pressure applications, pressure stability is important. The machine needs to raise pressure in a controlled manner and maintain the specified test pressure without unnecessary fluctuation.
Our steel pipe hydrostatic testing equipment can therefore be configured with the appropriate high-pressure pump, valves, pressure measurement components and control logic according to the customer's requirements.
The target pressure is not selected from a generic machine specification. It is determined from the pipe specification and the applicable testing requirement.
PLC Control and Testing Operation
We can equip the single pipe hydro tester with PLC and HMI or an industrial computer to manage the testing sequence.
Typical controlled functions include:
- Pipe positioning
- Testing head movement
- End sealing
- Water filling
- Pressure building
- Pressure holding
- Pressure release
- Water drainage
- Testing cycle status
- Alarm and interlock functions
The control system can also be integrated with the customer's existing pipe handling equipment where required.
For production lines with higher output requirements, the testing station arrangement can be designed according to the required cycle time rather than simply increasing the pressure capacity of one machine.
Water Filling and Recycling
Water management becomes important when hydrostatic testing is carried out continuously in a steel pipe production environment.
Our pipe hydrostatic testing equipment can be designed with water storage, filling, drainage and recycling arrangements. This reduces unnecessary water consumption and keeps the testing process more suitable for continuous production.
Where required, a water-based anti-corrosion solution can be used as the testing medium. The actual water treatment or additive concentration is determined according to the customer's production process and material requirements.

Why We Build the Machine Around the Pipe
A Single Pipe Hydro Tester is not simply a high-pressure pump connected to two sealing heads.
The mechanical structure, pipe alignment, end sealing, water filling, hydraulic pressure system, pressure measurement, control system and water handling all have to work together.
This is particularly important when the machine needs to handle different pipe sizes or high test pressures.
At Marley Machinery, we therefore start with the steel pipe rather than starting with a fixed machine model. We use the customer's pipe range and testing requirements to determine the machine configuration.
Our goal is to provide a steel pipe hydro testing machine that fits the actual production process instead of supplying equipment with unnecessary or unsuitable capacity.
Marley Machinery Single Pipe Hydro Tester
At Marley Machinery, we manufacture customized single pipe hydro testers for steel pipe manufacturers.
Our equipment can be configured for different pipe dimensions, test pressures, production capacities and levels of automation. From the pipe handling and sealing system to the hydraulic circuit, PLC control and water recycling system, we design the machine according to the customer's requirements.
If you are planning a new steel pipe testing line or replacing an existing hydrostatic testing machine, send us your pipe diameter range, pipe length, wall thickness, required test pressure, pressure holding time and target production capacity.
We can use these details to evaluate the appropriate Single Pipe Hydro Tester configuration for your application.
